Virgil Abloh Figures of Speech Exhibition

2022/04/26

Virgil Abloh: "Figures of Speech” at the Garage Gallery at Doha’s Fire Station was the American artist and designer’s first museum exhibition in the Middle East. Originally conceived as a triumphant mid-career milestone, the exhibition became a posthumous retrospective following Abloh's untimely death.

The artistic director for Louis Vuitton menswear and CEO of Off-White famously blended high fashion with streetwear, pioneering new approaches within the industry from product design to music, architecture and the visual arts. The exhibition featured more than 55 works, created over the course of nearly two decades.

In footage recorded in November 2021, Virgil Abloh paints in the courtyard of the Fire Station while reflecting on his creative practice, defying expectations and the importance of questioning everything.

Curated by Michael Darling in collaboration with the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago and Samir Bantal from AMO/OMA, the exhibition offered an unprecedented look at Abloh’s work and coincided with the week-long event, Qatar Creates: Fashion and Design, bringing together international creatives for a celebration of local and regional work.
