The Doha Film Institute (DFI) showcases local filmmaking talent as well as bringing international cinematic talent to Doha from around the world.
The DFI has been pivotal in developing the local film industry, supporting aspiring Qatari filmmakers through the funding of projects, masterclasses and mentoring programmes.
Under the leadership of DFI Founder and Chairperson H.E. Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, the institute has become a reference in the region, embodying their motto “Film is Life” through storytelling, collaboration and education.
Many past Qatar Museums exhibitions have also been affiliated with events at the DFI such as the Doha Film Experience for Baghdad: Eyes Delight at MIA. Providing added context and a more in depth experience, a collection of films were chosen to tie-in with the themes of the exhibition.

Screenings are typically held at Katara Cultural Village, VOX cinema at Doha Festival City and other pop-up locations, including a fun open air Drive-in Cinema in Lusail.
Lebanese Filmmaker Alessandra El Chanty was commissioned to make a short documentary film by the Qatar-MENASA 2022 Year of Culture, after winning the Bader Best Short Film Award at Ajyal.
To commemorate the Qatar-Morocco 2024 Year of Culture, Ajyal Festival will feature a series of short Moroccan films as part of this year’s Made in Morocco special screenings programme co-curated by the Marrakech Short Film Festival (MARRAKECHsFF).
