With a career that spans some of the world’s most high-profile sporting events, including the unforgettable FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™, Argentinian in Qatar Martin Cantero offers a unique perspective on the passion and pride that unite Qatar and Argentina.
In this interview, he reflects on his personal and professional journey, exploring how his Argentinian identity has found a vibrant expression in Doha through football, local friendships, and the occasional sip of Mate.
I came to Qatar as an expert Access Management and Accreditation Consultant for the FIFA Club World Cup 2019 and the 24th Arabian Gulf Cup. I was very impressed by Qatar's infrastructure readiness, stadiums, roads, services and more.
It was, without any doubt, one of the most memorable events I have been part of so far, not only as a member of the Organising Committee but as an Argentinian fan. Experiencing my national team throughout the tournament will stay with me forever.
Every project that I have been involved in has left unique lessons and experiences, of course, Qatar was not the exception. The multi-cultural environment, together with the particularity of the FWC2022 regarding accessibility to multiple stadiums, definitely shaped event management definitions in a unique way.
It was amazing to see how not only Qataris but also residents and visitors of different nationalities adopted the Argentinian fan culture and followed and celebrated the national team as if they were Argentinians too.
Definitely, it was noticeable at every match, at any stadium where Argentina played and also in different locations across Qatar like Souk Waqif, Fan Fest, and the Fan Zones.
I am lucky to have very good Qatari friends who are very close to me and my family. Because of this, I am frequently invited to different Qatari social gatherings and every time I find myself answering questions or sharing about Argentine culture and sites to visit.
I haven’t yet been able to find much Argentinian food in Qatar, so we depend on our friends and family visiting to bring us authentic Alfajores, Dulce de Leche, and Yerba Mate. Even though I was surprised to learn that you can find Yerba Mate brands in supermarkets, as it is actually very popular among Syrians.
Culture-wise, Arab culture is very similar to Argentinian culture. We love to gather with family and friends to have fun and discuss sports, politics, cars, or whatever topic is in the news.
Definitely, I have Qatari friends and colleagues who now enjoy drinking Mate like Argentinians. I am still waiting to do a proper Asado as it is difficult to find a real Argentinian barbecue (known as a Parrilla) in the way that we are used to having.
Certainly, I have adopted Arabic coffee, karak, dates, rice with lamb or chicken. I even wear traditional Qatari attire that my Qatari friends acquired for me from a tailor when invited to social Qatari activities or trips.
There were a lot, but I guess that being there with family, friends, and colleagues for one of the best, if not the best, FIFA World Cup finals ever between Argentina and France.
