When is Qatar National Day and Why is it Celebrated?

Qatar National Day is celebrated each year on 18th December, a date which holds special significance for the nation. It commemorates the establishment of Qatar as a unified state under the leadership of Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani in 1878.

Some may confuse Qatar National Day with an independence celebration. However, Qatar's Independence Day is celebrated separately, on 3rd September, marking the end of British protection in 1971.

Instead, Qatar National Day (also known as Founder’s Day), marks the moment that Qatar was officially unified and began its journey towards becoming the independent, prosperous nation it is today.

The celebration on 18th December was officially established as a national holiday by the Qatari government in 2007, under the direction of His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, to honour the leadership of Sheikh Jassim and the nation’s founding values.

The Story Behind Qatar National Day

The history behind Qatar National Day is deeply intertwined with the leadership of Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani, who played a pivotal role in shaping the nation.

It was on this day in 1878 that Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani, the founder of modern Qatar, succeeded his father as the ruler of the country. During his reign, Sheikh Jassim navigated complex regional dynamics, consolidating power and maintaining Qatar's autonomy amidst pressures from larger powers in the region.

Sheikh Jassim is also credited with consolidating the various tribes and laying the foundation for the unified, modern State of Qatar. As a result, the day symbolises pride in Qatari identity, highlighting the themes of unity, loyalty and progress.
