An Evening in New York - Celebrating Qatar and Morocco at the 4th Annual Sustainable Goals Banquet

2025/01/15

In the heart of New York City, this elegant event brought together global leaders, dignitaries, and influential figures for an evening dedicated to cultural exchange and sustainable development.

The 4th Annual Sustainable Goals Banquet, hosted during the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, saw Fashion 4 Development and Education Above All partner with Years of Culture to celebrate Qatar-Morocco 2024 and highlight the cultures of both nations.

Alongside world-class entertainment, the evening provided a platform for meaningful dialogue around cultural preservation, education, and the pursuit of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In the stunning setting of historic New York venue 583 Park Ave, guests engaged in thoughtful discussions on how cultural exchange can help drive the world closer to achieving sustainability goals. The event not only celebrated the rich historical legacies of Qatar and Morocco but also underscored their ongoing contributions to global social development and education efforts.

About Fashion 4 Development

Fashion 4 Development (F4D) was founded in 2011 by Evie Evangelou, in partnership with the United Nations. It is a global platform dedicated to aligning the fashion industry with sustainable development, bringing together thought leaders, heads of state and international influencers, in support of  the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. F4D fosters initiatives worldwide that empower communities, preserve cultural heritage, and promote eco-conscious lifestyle practices.

About Education Above All

Education Above All (EAA) is an international foundation dedicated to providing equitable access to quality education worldwide. Founded by Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, former First Lady of Qatar and a committed education advocate, EAA strives to uplift and empower marginalised and vulnerable communities. The organisation envisions a world where everyone has the opportunity to benefit from transformative education, regardless of their circumstances.

Supporting Creative Youth Projects in Morocco

The event was filled with notable exhibitions and presentations, bringing together the key themes of cultural heritage and sustainability. One of the standout moments of the night was the Weaving Hopes exhibition, which showcased a collection of intricate artisanal pieces crafted by young people from Morocco.

These talented young artists are part of a project by the Silatech Foundation, in partnership with Al Amana Microfinance Institution, which has helped over 134,000 young people transform their creative passions into sustainable livelihoods. The exhibition was a real testament to how art and culture can be powerful tools for social change and economic empowerment.

Another highlight of the evening came from Ahmed Saif Al Hajari, a Youth Advocate for the Education Above All (EAA) Foundation, who gave an inspiring presentation on youth-led sustainability projects. Al Hajari spoke passionately about the critical role of education in achieving the UN SDGs, emphasising how young people must be the driving force towards a more sustainable future.

Celebrating Morocco’s Artistic Heritage

Following a live performance by the cast of The Lion King on Broadway, guests also enjoyed the music of Moroccan singer Ferdaous. A series of thoughtfully chosen exhibitions throughout the event also showcased the depth and beauty of Moroccan craftsmanship.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Thani, the visionary behind the Institute of Arab and Islamic Art in New York, curated a stunning collection of Moroccan caftans, which captivated guests with their elegance and intricate design.

Renowned Moroccan designer Siham El Habti, also presented an array of Amazigh jewellery and traditional Kaftans, offering a window into Morocco’s vibrant artistic traditions.

There was also an impressive showcase of vintage Kaftans in collaboration with the creative genius of Yves Saint Laurent and Jean Paul Gaultier. These iconic fashion pieces paid homage to the timeless appeal of Moroccan attire while blending in contemporary design elements, making them a symbol of cultural continuity and innovation.

Sustainable Moroccan Cuisine

Guests were treated to an exquisite culinary experience, with a fully plant-based Moroccan menu, expertly crafted by the acclaimed Chef David Fhima. The flavours of Morocco, combined with a focus on plant-based ingredients, underscored the night’s theme of sustainability, demonstrating how food can serve as a bridge between cultures while promoting sustainable practices.

Amidst the creative showcase and discussions on sustainability, the evening also recognised individuals who have made significant contributions to global causes. Dr. Najat Maalla M’jid, a Moroccan national and the United Nations Special Representative on Violence against Children, was awarded the Children’s Advocacy Award for her lifelong dedication to protecting and promoting children's rights. Her work over the past four decades has had a profound impact, helping to create a safer, more equitable world for children.

Cultural Diplomacy for Sustainable Development

The 4th Annual Sustainable Goals Banquet was part of a broader two-day programme, which included Fashion 4 Development’s (F4D) 12th Annual First Ladies Luncheon

Both events demonstrated how fashion, diplomacy, and sustainable development can intersect to create lasting impact. The shared vision of these events was clear: by fostering cultural understanding and collaboration, nations can work together to address some of the world’s most pressing challenges, on a global stage.

As the Qatar-Morocco 2024 Year of Culture continues, a series of upcoming events and initiatives held in cities across Qatar and Morocco will further celebrate the shared cultural heritage and forward-thinking ambitions of these two nations.
