ReContextualising Architecture and Urbanism
During the Qatar-Russia 2018 Year of Culture, international architects and city planners attended the “Limits of Architecture” conference at the Strelka Institute in Moscow, with talks about innovative architectural projects in Qatar.
Highlights of the event included a lecture about the evolution of local Qatari architecture from the pre-oil to post-oil eras and whether it was possible to build a glass-and-concrete skyscraper while remaining in keeping with traditions.
There was discussion around the similarities and differences between construction in northern Russia and Doha, looking at some of the most spectacular buildings in Qatar.
There was also a fascinating debate around what city planners from the south could teach the north, if there was a universal approach to building among ice and sand, and how harsh conditions allow architects to set new design rules.
