From Material to Market - The Art of Bookmaking in Morocco
As part of the Qatar-Morocco 2024 Year of Culture, the Qatar National Library present an exhibition that delves into the rich tradition of book-making in the Maghrib.
Moroccan book arts are among the oldest and longest enduring in the Islamic world, with artisans playing a crucial role in preserving Islamic texts, and shaping cultural and intellectual life across the region.
This exhibition traces the journey from local tanneries and papermills, to the book-binder’s workshop in the medina where craftsmen would combine natural materials like leather, paper and ink to create beautiful manuscripts. Central to the exhibition is the vibrant book market, where raw materials are bought and finished books are sold, a practice dating back hundreds of years.
“From Material to Market: The Art of Book-Making in Morocco” showcases an impressive selection of books, manuscripts, lithographs and other treasures from the Heritage Library’s collection. We invite you to explore this centuries-old craft and immerse yourself in the rich cultural heritage of the Maghrib. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to explore the beauty and history behind every page!
