CULTUKAR Design Residency in Sumba Indonesia
As part of the Qatar-Indonesia 2023 Year of Culture, Qatari and Indonesian designers will participate in a series of three-month long design residency programmes in Indonesia, experiencing the best of Indonesian design and learning about traditional Indonesian techniques in Sumba, with local craft masters.
The different residencies will focus on unique creative traditions including a design residency focusing on metal-working in Sumba, where participants will learn the art of jewellery making.
CULTUKAR Design Residency in Sumba Indonesia
The hybrid programme spans three months from May-July, including a 10-day onsite workshop in Tasikmalaya in West Java, Indonesia. Participants will take part in various activities, ranging from group discussions, skill apprenticeships, crafter and designer studio visits, to prototype design and development. Participants will also be tasked with considering the challenge of responsible production using sustainable materials and waste management.
In each of the programmes, two designers from Qatar will be paired with an Indonesian designer in the spirit of exchanging ideas, knowledge and fostering long-term collaborations between them. Through the collaborative residency, they will create designs for a showcase to be held during Jakarta Fashion Week at Indonesian Contemporary Art and Design (ICAD) and an installation at the National Gallery of Indonesia.
The two selected Qatari participants will join material designer Hana Surya and textile designer John Martono who will represent the Indonesian creative industries during this hybrid residency.
