A Culinary Journey Through Indonesia

Meda, Jayapura and Bali, Indonesia

During the Qatar-Indonesia 2023 Year of Culture, leading chefs Noof Almarri and Chef Hassan will participate in a three week long culinary journey through Indonesia, seeking new experiences, flavours, knowledge and a cultural exchange between the two countries.

Taking place in three unique cities, two well-known Qatari chefs will team up with an Indonesian celebrity chef to explore and experience the best of Indonesian cuisine in each location.

The trip will culminate at the Ubud Food Festival with a series of inspiring workshops, sharing sessions and cooking demonstrations where the chefs will have the opportunity to showcase their findings and share how their journey across Indonesia has influenced them.

A Culinary Journey Through Indonesia.

During this extraordinary journey, Qatari and Indonesian chefs will experience the archipelago’s diverse culinary culture through local markets, ingredients and dishes. The chefs will enjoy food tastings, local visits, and discover new and traditional foods for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

From 15th to 19th June, the participating chefs will sample the culinary delights of Medan in North Sumatra. They will visit a traditional Indonesian market, enjoy a cooking experience of Bataknese food in a local home, visit a culinary school and tour the city’s most iconic destinations.

From 20th to 25th June, the participating chefs will travel to Jayapura in the province of Papua, tasting the region’s traditional dishes. They will discover new ingredients during a visit to a local market and learn about the food culture from local people. The chefs will have a typical cooking experience, preparing dishes using the region's “Bakar Batu Papua” method and more.

Then from 26th to 29th June, the chefs will head to Bali, beginning with a visit to the Pasar Ubud market, they will then have the opportunity to cook quintessentially Balinese food at the ‘Desa Les Bali Mula’ traditional kitchen.  The chefs will visit a cacao plantation in Tabanan and learn about different kinds of Balinese salt before attending the Ubud Food Festival from 30th June to 2nd July.
