Qatar, Canada and Mexico 2026, Crafting Design Futures

Presented as part of the Qatar, Canada and Mexico 2026 Year of Culture, Crafting Design Futures is an exhibition held at the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City, presenting the results of a residency that paired four designers from Qatar and the wider Middle East, North Africa and South Asia (MENASA) region with Mexican master artisans.

Developed by Design Doha and presented within Design Week Mexico's Visión y Tradición programme, the exhibition shows collaborations in glass engraving, clay, ceramics and hand-hammered copper. Syrian designer Kenan Alkuwatly worked with master engraver José Cruz. Lebanese designer and multidisciplinary artist Shirine Sbaiti worked with Norberto y Rosi. Qatar-based Iranian designer Yasamin Shaikhi partnered with Estudio Guerrero. British-Indian architect and designer Armaan Bansal joined Alan Pureco's family workshop.

Curated under the theme "Perspectives from the Global South," the works reflect not only the designers' original concepts, but the creative contribution of the artisans and the conversations between them. To explore the full story behind these collaborations, read the editorial feature on Crafting Design Futures, and to find more events this season, browse the Events page.

About the Crafting Design Futures Residency Programme 2026

Visión y Tradición

The residency gave four designers from Qatar and the wider MENASA region a first-hand experience of learning from Mexican master artisans in their own workshops. Each pair developed the work together, and initial ideas changed through the process of making as the designers encountered techniques, materials and knowledge built through years, and in some cases generations, of practice.

Kenan Alkuwatly worked with master engraver José Cruz in glass. Shirine Sbaiti joined Norberto y Rosi in clay. Yasamin Shaikhi partnered with Estudio Guerrero in ceramics and alpaca metal. Armaan Bansal worked with Alan Pureco's family workshop in hand-hammered copper.

The resulting objects reflect not only the designers' original concepts, but the creative contribution of the artisans and the conversations between them. The works are presented within Design Week Mexico's Visión y Tradición programme at the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City, from 8 October to 1 November 2026.
