Equestrianism and Horse Racing - Horse Culture in Qatar

2025/01/15

Qatar has a profound connection with horses and a history of equestrianism that dates back many centuries. From Qatar’s desert landscapes to the vibrant metropolis of Doha, horses remain an important part of the Qatari identity, representing the country’s historical legacy as well as its contemporary passions. Qatar also shares a mutual love for equestrianism with Morocco, highlighted during the Qatar-Morocco 2024 Year of Culture.

Horses in Arabic Culture

Throughout the Arab world, horses have long held a culturally significant role. Historically, horses were indispensable for travel and trade, and their highly regarded status is reflected in the region's art, poetry and folklore.

The Arabian horse, known for its speed, endurance and elegance, is widely considered one of the most beautiful horses in the world. This deep connection with horses is celebrated in various cultural practices, events and equestrian sports across the Arab world, continuing to this day.

Horses in Qatari Culture

The Arabian horse has been central to Qatari life for centuries. The importance of horses in Qatari culture can be traced back to the original Bedouin tribes that lived on the Arabian Peninsula. For these nomadic people, horses were essential for survival in the challenging desert environment and ultimately became symbols of status and wealth. Today, horses are celebrated through various national events and festivals and play a central role in traditional Qatari sports, such as horse racing and show jumping.

Qatar’s contemporary passion for horses is evident in the numerous annual events and initiatives that promote the sport and showcase the country’s impressive equestrian talent. At the 2016 Rio Summer Olympic Games, Qatar competed in both team and individual events, where Sheikh Ali Al Thani came an impressive sixth place. The 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum in Doha provides deeper insight into the nation’s commitment to sports, including equestrian activities and historic Arabian World Cup trophies on display.

Horses in Moroccan Culture

Like Qatar, Morocco has a deep-rooted equestrian tradition. Horses have been central to the Moroccan way of  life for centuries, from transportation and agriculture to military endeavours. The Barb horse, native to North Africa, is known for its strength and agility and has been documented in the region throughout history.

In Morocco, the Tbourida, or Fantasia, is a traditional equestrian performance. This dramatic display of horsemanship involves riders dressed in traditional attire, charging their horses in unison. It is a powerful symbol of Moroccan heritage and is often performed at festivals and cultural events.

Several equestrian events took place as part of the Qatar-Morocco 2024 Year of Culture, including the Longines Global Champions Tour which was held in Rabat for the first time. The Salon du Cheval in El Jadida also highlighted both the cultural and competitive aspects of equestrianism.

Horse Racing in Qatar

Horse racing is a highly esteemed sport in Qatar, reflecting the country's love for equestrianism. The Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club (QREC) is the heart of horse racing in the country, with a packed racing season programme each year.

The horse racing season in Qatar runs from October to April, and races are typically held at the Al Rayyan track, a state-of-the-art facility located just outside Doha. Visitors can find detailed information about upcoming races, including entry fees and schedules on the QREC website.
