About The Moroccan Athletes

El Guerrouj won gold and set speed records in the 1,500-meter and 5,000-meter races at the 2004 Olympics. After retirement, El Guerrouj served on the International Olympic Committee and worked to fight doping in athletics.

El Moutawakel won gold in the 400-meter hurdles at the 1984 Olympics. As the first Moroccan to win gold, she inspired her compatriots and women in the Arab world and beyond. In 2012 she became the first woman from a Muslim Arab nation to be elected as Vice President of the International Olympic Committee.
