In the spirit of friendship and cultural exchange, this competition invites citizens of Qatar to capture the essence of Qatari culture in a style familiar to the Japanese and loved worldwide: manga! Qatar Japan 50th Anniversary

In celebration of 50 years of friendship between Qatar and Japan, The Year of Culture invites you to participate in the second manga competition, to draw manga which showcases both countries cultures and strong bonds throughout the years. Japanese Manga are a series of comics or graphic novels originating in Japan. Most manga conform to a style developed in Japan in the late 19th century, and the form has a long prehistory in earlier Japanese art. The term manga is used in Japan to refer to both comics and cartooning.

Manga Drawing Contest

Monetary Prizes: 1st Place 20,000 QR, 2nd Place 15,000 QR and 3rd Place 10,000 QR. The top 3 submissions to be printed, bound, and distributed in cultural events Japan as well as Qatar. The winning stories will be available for sale at Qatar Museums Gift Shop. More prizes coming soon.

Terms & Conditions

This competition is open to all people living in Qatar, nationals and residents of all ages and gender. The competition is free to enter. Original stories can be submitted in Arabic or English and applicants can submit more than 1 entry and a maximum of 3. The judging panel will consist of 4 entities: Qatar Museums, Embassy of Qatar in Tokyo, Japan Embassy in Doha and Geekdom – Doha Film Institute. The winning stories will be announced on Social-Media & Year of Culture website. The submitted entries need to be more than 12 pages per story. The maximum size of the submitted file is 200 MB. All entries must be submitted in electronic form (PDF). All entries must be in Black & White with Coloured Cover. Submitted entries can be in Arabic or English. Artists have the freedom and creativity to choose the style of manga they want. All entries must have a title and the name of the copyright holder on the cover page. The rights to publish, screen / perform, and visualize the winning entries belong to owned exclusively by Qatar Museums. Either the illustrator or story writer of the submitted work can apply for this competition if the copyright holder of the submitted entries agrees to the application. For publicity, the organiser of this competition may use all submitted entries regardless of whether they win in promoting future competitions; therefore, all participants agree to this condition and exempt the organiser from obtaining approval from the copyright holders.
