Ego by Takashi Murakami

QM Gallery Al Riwaq

‘murakami – ego’ at the QM Al Riwaq gallery in Doha was the largest collection of work by Japanese contemporary artist Takashi Murakami to ever be presented to the public, and the artist’s first in the Middle East.

Curated by Massimiliano Gioni as part of the Qatar-Japan 2012 Year of Culture, Ego featured more than 60 works from 1997 to the present, on loan from leading international institutions and private collections around the world, as well as several new works created especially for the show.

The main theme of EGO was the ecstasy and anxiety of contemporary culture.

The title drew on the artist’s desire to create an exhibition that is ‘a dialogue with one’s own ego’, reflecting Murakami’s struggle to create a private fictional universe in response to a growing information overload.

Ego was the final chapter in a trilogy of exhibitions that established Takashi Murakami as one of the most fascinating artists working today.
