Indonesian Workshop Month
Experience the rich creative traditions of Indonesian culture, with an exciting series of workshops in Qatar this month. Throughout September, the Qatar-Indonesia 2023 Year of Culture will welcome inspiring experts, makers and performers from across Indonesia to share their knowledge and passions in this programme of fun creative workshops in Doha.
The different workshops will introduce audiences in Qatar to new art forms and crafts including Wayang Suket Puppet-Making, Indonesian Batik, Traditional Indonesian Ceramics and Tari Melak Dance.

Wayang Suket Puppet-Making Workshop
When? Saturday 2nd September 2023 - Monday 4th September 2023
Where? Liwan, Doha
Learn all about the beautiful Javanese tradition of Wayang Suket "straw puppets” during this practical workshop at Liwan in Doha. The workshop will introduce participants to the history, philosophy and characters that make Wayang Suket puppetry so unique. Participants will be shown how to create their very own Wayang Suket puppets step-by-step, before performing live with skilled Indonesian puppeteers. Discover more and book your place now!

Indonesian Batik Workshop
When? Saturday 9th September 2023 - Tuesday 12th September 2023
Where? M7, Doha
This series of creative Indonesian Batik workshops at M7 in the Msheireb Design District will share the Indonesian art of Batik with new audiences in a fun and interactive way. There are two types of Batik workshops available, a 1-hour session (suitable for ages 10+) and a longer workshop for ages 16+ that will last 3 hours.
The shorter workshops will introduce participants to the historic art of Batik fabric patterns, creating their own original design on a piece of material to take home. The longer sessions will take a deep-dive into the world of natural dyes, with participants designing a Batik pattern on a shawl-sized piece of fabric. Find out more and book your workshop now!
Traditional Indonesian Ceramics Workshop
When? Thursday 21st September - Sunday 24th September 2023
Where? Liwan, Doha
Explore the fascinating history of ceramics in Indonesia during this immersive workshop series at Liwan.
In addition to learning about traditional Indonesian ceramic art, participants will get a chance to experiment with different Batik glazing techniques and designs. Tari Merak Dance Workshop
When? Thursday 28th September - Saturday 30th September 2023
Where? Black Box Theatre, Multaqa Education City, Doha
Learn all about the Indonesian art form of Tari Merak dance, also known as the Peacock Dance at this exciting workshop for women in Doha at Multaqa Education City. Discover the history, context and cultural significance of this elegant tradition from West Java. Participants will enjoy a special performance of Tari Merak by Indonesian dancers, before having the opportunity to learn a choreography of moves for themselves.
