Shu’a’ Khalifa is a Qatari novelist. With her sister, Dalal Khalifa, she was one of the first two novelists to publish work in Qatar. Her first novel, Passage to Truth, was written in 1987, and was followed by The Old Dreams of the Sea, written in 1990; both were published in 1993. Her novels question modern life and the modernization of Qatar, mixed with nostalgia. 📚

It all started in 1893 when cousins Théophile Bader and Alphonse Kahn had an idea for a luxury bazaar and decided to establish a small novelty store in the corner of Rue La Fayette and Rue de la Chaussée d’Antin.

If you pass by Opéra Bastille this July you will find 500 portraits in black and white smiling at you!

These portraits are the signature of the contemporary artist JR. His photographic collage technique fills the Opéra Bastille in central Paris as a tribute to hospital staff and workers who dedicated their time during COVID-19. JR and his team were able to photograph portraits captured in more than ten establishments across France (Paris, Nantes, Saint-Denis, Colmar and Bobigny).

Sophie Rostopchine, Countess of Ségur (1799-1874), was a French author in the 19th century. She is best known for her novel “Les Malheurs de Sophie” (Sophie’s misfortunes), which is a book intended for children.

She is an author of twenty well known novels in French passed down through generations. The themes of her novels often circle around the good triumphing over the evil!

🍰 Madeleines are delicate and soft mini sponge cakes made with eggs, flour, sugar and butter. They always have a distinctive shell shape with tapered edges, smooth on one side and bumpy on the other.

Some people say that the madeleine was first baked by a pastry chef, Jean Avice, in the 19th century, although most people think that the madeleine is much older in origin.

👀 Discover the Centre Pompidou

If you ever visited the 4th district of Paris, you must have seen the Centre Pompidou!

The building stands out with its “inside out” design and numerous colours. It is one of the biggest museums of modern art in Europe and has a large collection of art, including masterpieces by Wassily Kandinsky, Henri Matisse, Andy Warhol, and Pablo Picasso. 🎨

“Le Pouce” was created by the French artist César Baldaccini, who created a series of his own thumb enlarged in detail. The first thumb he created was first produced for an exhibition on the theme of hands titled “La Main, de Rodin à Picasso” in 1965, in Paris. ⁣

The artist then made a series of increasingly larger versions of the thumb, scaling-up the smaller model using traditional techniques. His largest thumb yet is the one located at La Défense in Paris, which measures 12 meters and weighs 18 tons! ⁣

He serves as an Adviser at the Amiri Diwan (Royal Palace of Qatar) and was formerly the Minister of Culture, Arts and Heritage of Qatar (2008-2016). Abdulaziz Al-Mahmoud is a Qatari author. He previously served as editor-in-chief of The Peninsula and its Arabic counterpart, Al Sharq. ⁣

The carpet is embellished with pearls, diamonds, rubies and emeralds, and was commissioned by the Maharaja of Baroda, Khande Rao Gaekwad, in India in 1865. It was intended to be a gift to adorn the tomb of the Prophet in Medina. However, the maharajah died in 1870 before the donation was made and the pearl carpet remained in his family.

Built in 1982, the Fire Station was previously the home of the first civil defense authority in Qatar. It was repurposed in 2014 to host the Fire Station Museum by the artist in residence and architect Ibrahim Al-Jaida who preserved the original details of the building and its tower.

The spider sculpture is among the world’s largest sculptures! Bourgeois captures a fragile moment, where a protective mother carries her eggs. 🕷️⁣
The Maman sculpture is a permanent piece at the Qatar National Convention Center and was the centerpiece of the “Conscious and Unconscious” exhibition in 2012. The sculpture draws onlookers in, connecting them to personal memories around the early stages of life.⁣

Outremer is a photo series on a projector by Oriol Vilanova. It is a research project conducted at the Musée National des Arts Asiatiques Guimet, a museum founded in 1889 by the industrialist Emile Guimet.
The collection of photos represent a collection of post cards by the actress Clemence d’Ennery. Through his research, Villanova examines the construction of imagination and the persistence of certain ideas.

Michael Rakowitz’s artifact installation with the title The invisible enemy should not exist which takes its name from the direct translation of Aj-ibur-shapu, the ancient Babylonian processional way that ran through the Ishtar Gate.
The pieces at Palais de Tokyo present the reconstructions of lost artifacts in Iraq, and are part of a series of reconstructions made from the packaging of Middle Eastern foodstuffs and local Arabic newspapers.

On the 18th of November 2009, the Algerian football team beat Egypt, thus securing its place for the 2010 World Cup.
Amina Menia recalls the almost surreal nature of the celebrations. They reminded her of the festive imagines that followed the independence of Algeria in 1962. Thus her video draws a parallel between political and sporting history by using archive images, but also two original interviews.

Amal Kenawy was one of the most prolific and successful North African artists of her generation.
Her piece Silent Multitudes portrays a large structure built in an architectural style typical of informal dwellings in Cairo’s poorest neighborhoods. Over one hundred liquid petroleum gas tanks surround it.

Basim Magdy is an Egyptian artist that often produces avant garde films. No Shooting Stars is one of Magdy’s productions.
It is built around the personal narrative of an unidentified inhabitant of the ocean space, a territory that lays dormant on the margins of our awareness and does not enter history books. Dream-like scenes drift in dissonance with a narration that has no beginning or end.

Dominique Hurth’s installation brings together copper and textiles elements, a cardboard model and written words, where she investigates the original purpose of Joy Forum’s architecture and offers her own cultural history of the scale model. The architecture encounters the dollhouse, the dreamhouse, the fully equipped kitchen, the dishwasher and the self-cleaning house and looks back at the tension between the model and the role model and the emancipatory potential that architecture contains.

Khalil El Ghrib is a Moroccan artist whose works are the fruit of by-products from his native town of Asilah in Morocco. He collects poor materials from ruined houses and accumulates decaying objects that reveal the grip of time. This process of decomposition lies at the heart of his practice, which takes the view that creation is a living form in constant transformation.

Information societies lie at the heart of reflexions of Mounir Fatmi, whose works make use of materials which are close to obsolescence. For his installation Everything Behind Me 01, he has used coaxial cables used for the broadcasting of television waves, the transmission of video signals, or else telephone connections. ⁣

Inji Efflatoun (1924 – 1989) was an Egyptian painter and activist.

Her painting « Greeting to South Lebanon Bride » was painted in 1985. Generally, Efflatoun’s paintings were strongly inspired by the social reality of the people of the Egyptian working class, such as peasants, craftsmen and laborers, with a special focus on women and their daily struggle.

Kader Attia is a French/Algerian artist. At the “Our World is Burning” exhibition, Attia presents the piece Chaos and Harmony.

His work reflects on prevailing differences between contemporary cultures and aesthetics in the context of a globalized world. In installations, photographs, and videos, Attia focuses on the liminal zones that separate contrasting sensibilities, and on attempts to close these gaps. Much of his research has been centered on the concept of repair.

The Power of Two or Three Suns reflects Yto Barrada’s response to our individual and collective reactions to the onset of disaster, ecological or otherwise, and her abiding interest in relationships across cities, islands and time.

Yto Barrada is a Franco-Moroccan multimedia visual artist living and working in Tangier, Morocco and New York City. Her video instalment is one of the few at Palais de Tokyo’s exhibition “Our World is Burning”.

Bady Dalloul’s works are most often geopolitical narratives with a documentary look. Since 2011, the artist has documented the evolution of Syria by using images broadcasted by the media, which he re-appropriates in the form of miniature drawings executed with a childish hand.

Wael Shawky: Al Araba Al Madfuna invites the viewer to walk through elements of the films and their processes of production – architectural artefacts, sculptures, and drawings – placed inside a built landscape of sand.

Otobong Nkaga’s work questions the use of natural resources, to which she combines her own personal experience. The notion of territory thus plays a sensitive role in her multimedia practice where memory and history come to life in material forms.

We the People (detail) is part of a series of over 300 sculptures by Danh Vo, each of which consist of a fragment of a copy of Auguste Bartholdi’s Liberty Enlightening the World.

Each exhibition of the work features a varying number of fragments, underlying the impossibility of brining together all of the pieces of the series, which is dispersed throughout contemporary art collections around the world.

In a series of drawings, Mounira Al Solh documents her meetings and conversations with displaced Syrian refugees in the Middle East and Europe.

Her art piece “My specialty was to make a peasants’ haircut, but they obliged me work till midnight often” is part of a series of embroideries that speaks to how personal stories in this political context create collective history.

Francis Alÿs is a Belgian-born, Mexico-based artist. His work emerges in the interdisciplinary space of art, architecture, and social practice.

In “The Place of Stones” instalment at Palais de Tokyo, Aslı Çavuşoğlu presents questions of history and belief by examining objects, images, and cultural symbols that have changed over time. Asli’s large piece shows the importance of mechanisms through which political projects are constructed. Her work addressed ideas from the past and their effects on the present such as artefacts and raw materials used for colour pigments.
